Trust, Call, Praise – 2 Samuel 22 – 2025 Day 323

Read through the Bible in 2 Years: Psalm 119:81-120, 2 Samuel 22

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Psalm 119:105 ESV

David trusts in God because he knows His Word. David trusts that God sees him and cares about him, so he puts his faith in Him. David trusts in God because he knows that God is good. I’m reminded of Psalm 9:10, “And those who know your name put their trust in You, for You, O LORD, have not forsaken those who seek You,” written by David.

The better You know God’s Word, the better you will know God.

The more deeply you know God, the more deeply you will trust Him because you will know His immense and everlasting goodness and power.

This is why I love reading The Knowledge of the Holy by A.W. Tozer so much, and why I wrote my latest book, Who is God? A Former Atheist Looks at the Attributes of God.

As your trust in God grows, then you will seek Him and call upon Him, which reminds me of another Psalm of David. Psalm 34:4, “I sought the LORD, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.”

As you call upon Him, He will answer you, and then you will praise His Name.

For this I will praise you, O LORD, among the nations, and sing praises to your name. Great salvation he brings to his king, and shows steadfast love to his anointed, to David and his offspring forever.

2 Samuel 22:50-51 ESV

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your goodness and mercy towards me. You are the almighty God, the steadfast rock, the refuge for those who seek You. Help me to trust in You, fully and daily. May I not trust in horses and chariots and human wisdom, but in Christ, the solid rock on whom I stand. He is the eternal God and King of kings. It is in His holy name that I pray. Amen.

My soul makes its boast in the LORD; let the humble hear and be glad. Oh, magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together!

For the Sake of the Lord’s Great Name – 1 Samuel 12 – 2025 Day 302

Read through the Bible in 2 Years: Psalm 90, 1 Samuel 12

A.W. Tozer’s book, “The Knowledge of the Holy,” published in 1961, is the only book I’ve read again and again, well, besides the Bible and C.S. Lewis’s Narnia series.

I’d love to just quote the whole first chapter entitled, “Why We Must Think Rightly About God” for you, but instead I’ll share a few sentences and urge you to get the book for yourself.

  • “We tend by a secret law of the soul to move toward our mental image of God.”
  • “Compared with our actual thoughts about Him, our creedal statements are of little consequence.”
  • “All the problems of heaven and earth, though they were to confront us together and at once, would be nothing compared with the overwhelming problem of God: That He is; what He is like; and what we as mortal beings must do about Him.”

I was thinking about these ideas while reading 1 Samuel 12, especially this verse:

For the LORD will not forsake his people, for his great name’s sake, because it has pleased the LORD to make you a people for himself.

1 Samuel 12:22 ESV

We must ask ourselves questions like,

  • Is there a God and what is He like?
  • Does He exist for my pleasure or do I exist for His?
  • Does He see me, know me, and care about me?
  • Is He in charge or am I?

The answers to these questions are found, and must be found, in God’s Word rather than in our emotions, logical conclusions, or Google searches.

Heavenly Father, I believe that You are all-powerful and all-knowing and holy and righteous and good because Your Word and Your Creation confirm it. You have created me and redeemed me for Your pleasure, for Your Name’s sake. I want to live for Your glory. I want to glorify and magnify Your Name. Help me. Strengthen me. Enlighten me. Draw all men to Yourself that there would be a great cloud of witnesses praising You for all eternity. In the Name of Jesus Christ I pray. Amen.

The Eternal, Unchanging God – Hebrews 1 – 2025 Day 154

Read through the Bible: Psalm 120-121; Hebrews 1

I’m thankful God has given mankind the ability to grow and change, so we can shed our slavery to sin and be born anew after the image of our creator. I’m thankful for the blessing it’s been to watch my own babies grow up – learning to walk and talk, and read and write, and now with one raising babies of her own, one navigating married life, one on the verge of getting married, and one just graduated from high school and preparing to go to college.

But I’m equally thankful that God doesn’t change. He is immutable – that’s a fancy word for “unchanging.” God is perfect. He always will be perfect. Everything He does is perfect. We don’t need to worry that He’ll outgrow His love for us or learn something new about us, because He already knew it all from before the beginning of time. God is God. And we’re not. All Praise to His Holy Name!

If you’d like to learn more about who God is and what He’s like, I hope you’ll pick up a copy of my latest book, “Who is God? A Former Atheist Looks at the Attributes of God.” It examines twenty of God’s attributes, including His holiness, sovereignty, and self-sufficiency, in simple, practical language that even a brand-new Christian can understand.

Heavenly Father, What a comfort it is to know that You are the unchanging God! Even things that seem unchanging – the sandy seashore, the rocky mountains, the sun, moon, and stars – even these things change and wear out. But You, oh God, You remain the same. You never have to get better because You are already completely perfect. You will never wear out or grow old or get weary. I’m looking forward to eternity with You. In the name of Jesus Christ, Your Eternal Son, I pray. Amen.

Trust. Call. Praise. Thoughts from 2 Samuel 22.

Read through the Bible in 2 Years: 2 Samuel 22

David trusts in God because he knows his character. David knows that God is good so he puts his trust in Him. David knows that God sees him and cares about him so he puts his faith in Him. I’m reminded of another psalm David had written.

And those who know your name
put their trust in you,
for you, O LORD, have not forsaken
those who seek you.

Psalm 9:10 ESV

The more You know God, the more you will trust Him because you will recognize His everlasting goodness and power. This is why I love reading The Knowledge of the Holy by A.W. Tozer so much. I even wrote an ebook from my own thoughts on the topic.

As your trust in God grows, then you will seek Him and call upon Him, which reminds me of another Psalm of David. Psalm 34:4, “I sought the LORD, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.”

As you call upon Him, He will answer you, and You will praise His Name.

For the Lord’s Great Name’s Sake. The Knowledge of the Holy and 1 Samuel 12.

Read through the Bible in 2 Years: 1 Samuel 12

I have recently begun reading A.W. Tozer’s “The Knowledge of the Holy” for the fifth time. Other than the Bible and C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia series, I’ve never read the same book again and again. The first chapter of “The Knowledge of the Holy” is entitled, “Why We Must Think Rightly About God.” I’d love to just quote the whole chapter for you, but instead I’ll share a few sentences and urge you to get the book for yourself.

“We tend by a secret law of the soul to move toward our mental image of God.”

“Compared with our actual thoughts about Him, our creedal statements are of little consequence.”

“All the problems of heaven and earth, though they were to confront us together and at once, would be nothing compared with the overwhelming problem of God: That He is; what He is like; and what we as mortal beings must do about Him.”

I was thinking about these ideas while reading 1 Samuel 12, especially this verse:

For the LORD will not forsake his people, for his great name’s sake, because it has pleased the LORD to make you a people for himself.

1 Samuel 12:22 ESV

Questions like, “Does God exist for my pleasure or do I exist for His? Does God see me, know me, and care about me? Is He in charge or am I? Will God keep His promises? Why?” run through my mind. The answers to these questions are found – must be found – in God’s Word rather than our emotions, logical conclusions, or Google searches.

Pray with me.

Heavenly Father, I know that You are all-powerful and all-knowing and holy and righteous and good because Your Word and Your Creation confirm it. You have created me and redeemed me for Your pleasure, for Your Name’s sake. I want to live for Your glory. I want to glorify and magnify Your Name. Help me. Strengthen me. Enlighten me. The Eternal, Unchanging God

Read through the Bible: Hebrews 1

“You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of your hands; they will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment, like a robe you will roll them up, like a garment they will be changed. But you are the same, and your years will have no end.”

Hebrews 1:10-12 ESV

Heavenly Father, What a comfort it is to know that You are the unchanging God! Even things that seem unchanging – the sandy coastline, the rocky mountains, the sun, moon and stars – even these things change and wear out. But You, oh God, You remain the same. You never have to get better because You are already completely perfect. You will never wear out or grow old or get weary. I’m looking forward to eternity with You. In the name of Jesus I pray. Amen.
