El Elyon, God Most High – 2025 Day 38 (Genesis 13-14)

Read through the Bible in 2 Years: Psalm 6; Genesis 13-14

“And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. (He was priest of God Most High.)

And he blessed him and said, ‘Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand!’ And Abram gave him a tenth of everything.

And the king of Sodom said to Abram, ‘Give me the persons, but take the goods for yourself.’

But Abram said to the king of Sodom, ‘I have lifted my hand to the LORD, God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth, that I would not take a thread or a sandal strap or anything that is yours, lest you should say, “I have made Abram rich.”‘”

– Genesis 14:18-23 ESV

What does it mean that God is the God Most High?

God Most High is the possessor of heaven and earth, who gives offspring and land, who brings victory and defeat. God Most High is the supreme, sovereign authority over all things in heaven and on earth. Every knee bows before Him. He is the creator, sustainer, and owner of everything. He is the ruler over all things. He gives and takes away according to His will.

And Jesus Christ, God’s only Begotten Son, fully God and fully man, God in flesh, God with us, is our Great High Priest and King, higher than any earthly priest or king. Take a minute now to read more about it in Hebrews 7. Here’s a taste of it:

“For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people, since he did this once for all when he offered up himself.”

– Hebrews 7:26-27 ESV

Let’s remember who we are praying to! We are praying to GOD MOST HIGH, and we have His own Son, Jesus Christ, higher than any earthly high priest, interceding for us!

Heavenly Father, God Most High, Creator and Possessor of heaven and earth, Ruler of all creation,

What a privilege it is to come before you and to lay our needs at Your feet. We know that You hear us. We know that You see us. Even though You are almighty and transcendent over all creation, You love us, Your children.

We ask You, Lord, to provide for us our daily bread, to forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us, and to protect us from the temptations of the evil one. Give us eyes to see You and ears to hear Your voice. Strengthen our weak knees to follow You and go wherever You send us, trusting that You are indeed God Most High. Give us grateful hearts that recognize that everything we have is a gift from Your good, almighty hand.

We pray for our husbands and children, that they will submit willingly to Your Almighty power and mercy and holiness. Give them the strength to be humble and honest, to walk with integrity and faith. Give them hearts like Yours.

In the Most High Name of Jesus Christ, our Savior, Redeemer, Lord, and Priest, Amen.

In the Beginning – 2025 Day 29 (Genesis 1-2)

Read through the Bible in 2 years: Proverbs 29, Genesis 1-2

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”

– Genesis 1:1 ESV

Before the creation of the heavens and the earth, there was God. God is the creator. He is the only “I am,” the only One who was and is and is to come. Think about that for a minute. In the light of His eternal power, my life and problems look much more fleeting.

“The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.

And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.”

– Genesis 1:2-5 ESV

The very first thing that God created in the universe was light. The earth was dark, but God was not dark. Like we just read in 1 John 1:5b ESV, “God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all.” God created light before He created the sun and stars. There was day and night, and light and darkness before there was a sun.

At the end of the Bible, in Revelation, we read that in the new city on the new earth, there will be “no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb.” (Revelation 21:23 ESV)

“And God said, ‘Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years, and let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth.’ And it was so.”

– Genesis 1:14-15 ESV

Yet God created the sun, moon, and stars. Why? 1. He made them to separate the day and night. 2. He made them for signs and seasons and days and years. 3. He made them to be lights in the darkness of the heavens.

I love the thought that God created time. God gave us a sun and moon and stars to mark days and nights and seasons. How could we count the days until our baby is due or the days until Passover or the Feast of Booths or Resurrection Dayif we didn’t have a sun? God is so wise and merciful!

And think of all the things like eclipses and comets and the Milky Way that draw people (including me) to consider God’s existence and power. Like Psalm 19:1 says, “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.”

There’s so much I could write about Genesis 1! I’ll add just one more thought that I hope you already noticed, but took me years to pick up on. On days 1, 2, and 3 God created the things (the light, atmosphere, and land) and then on days 4, 5, and 6, He filled them (Heavenly bodies, air and sea creatures, animals and man in the land). God is intentional and orderly.

This revelation also helped me to remember the days of creation. On day one, God separated the light and the dark, and then on day four He put the sun, moon and stars in the heavens. On day two, He separated the water from the sky, and then on day five he filled the air and the water with animals to inhabit them. On day three, God separated the land from the water and then on day six, He put the man and animals on the land.

Heavenly Father,

You are the God of light. There is no darkness in You. Our world is indeed so dark, but You sent Your only Begotten Son Jesus to be the light of the world, to light it up, to draw people to You.

I pray that we would be a city on a hill, that the light of Jesus would shine brightly out of us and point people to you, that we would let our lights shine.

I pray that people would see the sun, moon and stars and the intricate, inexplicable, perfect beauty of all that You have created and they would know that You are indeed real and good and mighty and eternal.

Father, I pray that our study of Genesis would point us to You, the eternal almighty God.

Behold the man! Behold our God! – 2025 Day 19 (John 19)

Read through the Bible in 2 years: Proverbs 19, John 19

“And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head and arrayed him in a purple robe.

They came up to him, saying, ‘Hail, King of the Jews!’ and struck him with their hands.”

John 19:2-3 ESV

When I was growing up, I was such a sarcastic person. I regularly poked fun at others to get laughs and attention for myself at their expense, so reading this passage breaks my heart. Now I see the cruelty of these soldiers as they mock Jesus, pressing a crown of thorns on his head, dressing him in a purple robe, saying “Hail, King of the Jews,” and striking Him with their hands.

In verse 4, Pilate says, “Behold the man,” then moments later in verse 14, Pilate says, “Behold your king.”  Yet the chief priests, the Jewish chief priests, say, “We have no king but Caesar,” and my heart breaks again.

My heart breaks for all those people in our world who have turned their backs on the king who came to save them.

My heart breaks for the Jews who missed their Messiah who came for them, His own people. And my heart breaks for all of those Christians who are too busy to behold their king.

But my heart also breaks for Jesus Himself.

Can you imagine how it would feel to come into the world that you yourself had made, to take on human form and be born as a baby, to live among your own chosen people and speak to them week after week for more than 2 years, to perform miracle after miracle to really prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that you indeed are the long awaited messiah, only to hear your own people say not only “Crucify him,” but “We have no king but Caesar”?

They did not say,
“We have no king but
Almighty God.”

They said, “We have no king
but Caesar.”

How about you? Who is your king?

  • The current (or soon-to-be) president of the United States — or another nation of the world?
  • Money?
  • Fame?
  • The news media?
  • Your kids?
  • Your stomach?
  • Your couch?
  • Your bed?
  • Your phone?

What do you live for and serve and obey?

Can you say, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. As for me and my house, we will have no king but Jesus”?

Heavenly Father,

How I long to behold you, to see you face-to-face, to gaze upon Your glory. Hold me close to you. Bind me to you. Let me not wander away out of fear of the disapproval of man. May the fear of God be stronger than the fear of man in my life. Help me to remember that You are for me and if You are for me, what can man do to me?

Keep me from having a biting, sarcastic tongue. May my words be apples of gold in a setting of silver, full of grace and mercy and seasoned with salt.

I pray for the leaders of my nation and the leaders of all the nations of the world. I pray that they will bow the knee before King Jesus, that they will humble themselves before You. Lord, I praise You as Daniel did so many years ago – You are who changes times and seasons; You are who removes kings and sets up kings; You are who gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding. (Daniel 2:21 ESV) Make our nation’s leaders like King Nebuchadnezzar who said to Daniel, “Truly, your God is God of gods and Lord of kings, and a revealer of mysteries, for you have been able to reveal this mystery.” (Daniel 2:47 ESV)

Let us behold You, seated on Your throne. Let us worship and adore You alone, for nothing compares to You.

In the name of King Jesus we pray,

Amen.
